SPAZIO GRIOT 2023’s artistic programming, Refractions contends with the eponymous phenomenon in physics — related and applied to the concepts of (mis)representation — in its various facets and extensions. It will present Il Mio Filipino: For Those Who Care To See, the first solo show by artist and filmmaker Liryc Dela Cruz from 20th June to 30th July, 2023, and a 7-day multidisciplinary public program at Mattatoio and Exp - Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome, from 20th to 27th June 2023. In physics, refraction is the ‘bending’ of light or an electromagnetic wave when it enters a different medium. As rays of light pass through substances with different densities, such as air, water, or glass, they are redirected, and rays of light are bent from their initial path, causing a perceptive distortion. Analogously, (mis)representation is mediated by the metaphorical refraction of bodies and subjectivities through and within the multilayered psycho-social realities of the day. The socio-politics of representation fundamentally alter the way we see ourselves and construct our identity—as well as how we are seen and perceived by others. Representational aspects impact our daily interactions, change the trajectories of our lives, and influence our spheres of agency in various ways. Refractions questions, investigates, and engages with the refractive illusions of our time. It grapples with the intersections of self-perception and generalized stereotypical perceptions of iindividuals and groups that cast them in either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ light to ask: How can one harness the light itself to create a new source?
